First Day of Term

What a wonderful moment it is when a child reacts with shock and delight as they get a sound out of their flute for the first time! They instantly pull the instrument away from their face and look at it as if it's going to do it again. In my junior after-school class today I observed half-a-dozen of these epiphanies. I've only the vaguest memory of my own first notes, under the tutelage of an engaging red-headed teacher called maybe Julie, when I was eight years old. I'm still going thirty-five years later; it's nice to think that some of these kids might do the same.
